For Your Consideration: Skyfall

James Bond is no stranger to the Academy Awards, usually with nominations for Visual Effects, Sound Design, or Original Songs, but “Skyfall” will take on several other potential nominations this year, including the highly sought after Best Cinematography category with veteran Roger Deakins landing some incredible visuals. Roger Deakins has been nominated for Best Cinematography a record nine times, and this year will probably make it ten. Here’s a list of his year’s nominated and the films he worked on:

  •     1994: The Shawshank Redemption (nominated)
  •     1996: Fargo (nominated)
  •     1997: Kundun (nominated)
  •     2000: O Brother, Where Art Thou? (nominated)
  •     2001: The Man Who Wasn’t There (nominated)
  •     2007: The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (nominated)
  •     2007: No Country for Old Men (nominated)
  •     2008: The Reader (nominated)
  •     2010: True Grit (nominated)

The other category I strongly hope to see “Skyfall” represent is Best Original Song, with a beautifully crafted main theme for the Bond film by Adele, which is not only a great achievement in song writing but embodies the film perfectly. Apart from those two highly profiled categories, “Skyfall” has a strong chance of nailing the Sound Design nominations, and a possibility of landing in the Visual Effects category. With two Academy Awards wins out of nine nominations, “Skyfall” has a chance not only to bring more gold into 007’s world, but will hopefully end Deakins dry spell with a much deserved win, not just in his career, but for this masterpiece.
